You are eligible to vote in the municipal election if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are a Canadian citizen
- You are at least 18 years old
- You qualify to vote in the municipality
There are three ways to qualify as an elector:
1. Resident Elector
You live in the municipality. This includes if you own or rent your home, live in shared accommodation (even if you do not pay rent), or do not have a fixed address. This is the most common type of eligibility.
2. Non-Resident Elector
You own or rent property in a municipality, but it is not where you live.
You can only be a resident elector in one municipality; however, you may be a non-resident elector in other municipalities where you own or rent property.
3. Spouse of a Non-Resident Elector
You may qualify if your spouse owns or rents property in a municipality where neither of you lives.
You do not qualify if neither you nor your spouse personally own or rent the property (for example, if the property is owned by a business or a trust).
If you are unsure whether you qualify as a non-resident elector, please contact the Township Clerk.
Students
Students who are living away from home while attending school may be eligible to vote in two municipalities.
If you consider your “home” to be the place you return to when not attending school, you may vote:
- In your home municipality, and
- In the municipality where you live while attending school
