Marriage Licences

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

Before your ceremony, you will need a valid Ontario marriage licence. The Township of Asphodel-Norwood can issue a marriage licence for a ceremony taking place anywhere in Ontario. You do not need to live in Asphodel-Norwood or be married within the Township.

A marriage licence is valid for three (3) months from the date it is issued and can only be used for a marriage taking place in Ontario.

Marriage Licence Fee: $125.00

Wedding Ceremonies and Officiants

Please note that the Township of Asphodel-Norwood issues marriage licences but does not perform or officiate wedding ceremonies.

You are responsible for arranging an officiant who is legally authorized to perform marriages in Ontario. You may search for a wedding officiant serving the area where your ceremony will take place and confirm that they are authorized to perform marriages in Ontario. The Province also maintains a list of registered marriage officiants in Ontario.

How to Obtain a Marriage Licence

Marriage licences are issued by appointment through the Clerk’s Department.

Before your appointment:

  1. Complete a hard copy of the Marriage Licence Application.
  2. Book an appointment with the Clerk’s Department by calling 705-639-5343 or emailing clerk@antownship.ca.
  3. Gather the required identification and any additional supporting documents.
  4. Be prepared to pay the $125.00 marriage licence fee.

Both applicants are encouraged to attend the appointment and sign the application in the presence of the Clerk. However, if one applicant is unable to attend during regular office hours, the other applicant may attend alone.

If only one applicant attends:

  • the non-attending applicant must sign the application before the appointment; and
  • the attending applicant must wait and sign the application in the presence of the Clerk.

If both applicants attend, both must sign the application in the presence of the Clerk.

The attending applicant must bring the required original identification and supporting documents for both applicants.

Applicants are encouraged to review the Province’s Before Getting Married in Ontario information before booking an appointment.

Identification Requirements

Each applicant must provide two pieces of original, valid government-issued identification. At least one piece of identification for each applicant must include a photograph.

Acceptable identification may include:

  • birth certificate;
  • valid passport;
  • driver’s licence;
  • provincial photo identification card;
  • Canadian citizenship card or certificate;
  • permanent resident card or record of landing; or
  • Certificate of Indian Status or Secure Certificate of Indian Status.

Photocopies, scanned copies and photographs of identification are not accepted. The names shown on your identification must match the names provided on your application. If your identification does not match or you have questions about acceptable identification, please contact the Clerk’s Department before your appointment.

If You Were Previously Married

If you were divorced in Canada, you must provide an original or court-certified copy of one of the following:

  • certificate of divorce;
  • final decree; or
  • final judgment.

If you were divorced outside Canada, you must obtain authorization from the Province of Ontario before a marriage licence can be issued. This process can take several weeks, so applicants should review the Province’s requirements for remarrying after a divorce well in advance of the intended wedding date.

After Your Marriage Ceremony

Following the ceremony, your officiant is responsible for submitting the completed marriage licence to the Office of the Registrar General so the marriage can be registered.

A marriage licence is not the same as a marriage certificate. Once the marriage has been registered, you may apply for an Ontario marriage certificate. A marriage certificate provides legal proof of the marriage and may be required when updating identification or other records.
