Thinking of Running?
Running for municipal office is an important way to serve your community. If you’re considering becoming a candidate, review the information below and contact the Clerk’s Office to get started.
Nomination Period
Nomination Papers may be filed during the following period:
- May 1, 2026 to August 20, 2026 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
- Nomination Day: August 21, 2026 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Nomination Papers must be filed before the deadline on Nomination Day.
Filing a Nomination
Nominations must be submitted in person by the candidate or an agent acting on their behalf, and by appointment with the Clerk’s Office.

- Visiting the Municipal Office at 2357 County Road 45
A Candidate Welcome Package will be provided at the time of filing.
Filing Fees
A fee is required at the time of filing and must be paid by cash, debit, or cheque (payable to the Township of Asphodel-Norwood):
- $200 – Mayor (Head of Council)
- $100 – All other offices, including School Board Trustee
Who Can Run? (Candidate Eligibility)
You may run for municipal office if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are a Canadian citizen
- You are at least 18 years old
- You reside in the municipality, or you (or your spouse) own or rent property in the municipality
- You are not legally prohibited from voting
- You are not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

✔ Confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements

✔ Complete your Nomination Paper
✔ Bring acceptable identification showing your name and qualifying address
✔ Prepare your filing fee
✔ Review the Candidate Welcome Package and key deadlines
✔ File your nomination before the deadline
Important: You cannot raise or spend money on your campaign until your nomination has been filed.
Identification Requirements
All candidates (including incumbents) and agents filing on behalf of a candidate must provide identification showing their name and qualifying address.
Examples of acceptable identification include:
- Ontario driver’s licence or photo card
- Ontario health card (photo card)
- Ontario motor vehicle permit (plate portion)
- Mortgage, lease, or rental agreement
- Insurance policy
- Loan or financial agreement with a financial institution
A passport alone is not accepted as proof of address. It must be accompanied by an additional document showing your qualifying address.
Campaign Finances
Candidates may not raise or spend money on their campaign until their Nomination Paper has been officially filed.

Examination and Certification of Nominations
The Clerk will examine all filed nomination papers and certify those that comply with legislative requirements by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026.
If, by 4:00 p.m. on August 24, 2026, the number of certified candidates for an office is equal to or fewer than the number of positions available, the Clerk will declare those candidates elected by acclamation.
Additional Nominations (If Required)
If there are fewer candidates than positions available for an office, additional nominations may be filed:
- Wednesday, August 26, 2026 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Any additional nominations will be reviewed and certified by the Clerk by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Refund of Nomination Filing Fee
Candidates are eligible to receive a refund of their nomination filing fee if they submit their financial statements to the Clerk by the required deadline.
For the 2026 municipal election, financial statements must be filed by 2:00 p.m. on March 30, 2027.
A security deposit must be paid to the Township prior to the placement or display of any election sign for a Municipal Election or By-election:
- $100 for the office of Mayor/Deputy Mayor;
- $100 for the office of Councillor or Trustee; and
- $200 for a Registered Third Party.
Election signs must be removed at the candidates’ and/or registered third party’s expense within 72 hours after the completion of voting on voting day.
Any election sign found to be in violation of the Election Sign By-law is subject to seizure by the Township and any such seized signs shall be stored up to seven (7) days after the Election day; a candidate, or any person acting on the behalf of a candidate, or a registered third party may retrieve a sign stored by the Township but the Township may, without notice or compensation to any person, destroy or otherwise dispose of any election sign that has not been retrieved within the aforementioned period.
The sign removal fee is $20.00 per election sign.
