Gravel Road Conditions Update – Spring 2026
Each year, one of the most significant challenges facing rural municipalities is maintaining gravel road networks during the spring thaw. This is particularly true for the Township of Asphodel-Norwood.
As frost leaves the road base and with the addition of recent extended rainfall, the Township has experienced considerable deterioration across its gravel road network. While these conditions are frustrating for Public Works crews, the Township recognizes that they are even more challenging for residents who rely on these roads daily.
Why Grading is Delayed?
At this time, road conditions remain too wet for grading operations. Disturbing the road surface under these conditions would result in excessive mud and extremely slippery travel conditions - potentially more hazardous than the current potholes.
It is also important to note that a single day of sunshine does not necessarily mean grading can begin immediately. The majority of surface water must dry out of potholes and the road base to ensure safe and effective grading.
When Work Will Begin?
Public Works will begin grading operations as soon as conditions improve. Crews are planning to mobilize on Friday, April 17 for targeted spot grading where feasible.
Weather permitting, a sustained period of dry conditions is anticipated beginning the week of April 20, which will allow for more comprehensive grading efforts. Work will prioritize the most severely impacted roads.
2026 Gravel Program
Council has approved an aggressive gravel program for 2026, with more than 20,000 tonnes of gravel scheduled for application. This initiative is intended to support and renew the Township’s four-year gravel program. Gravel placement is expected to begin in May, once road conditions are suitable.
The Township appreciates residents’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore road conditions safely and effectively.
