Significant Weather Event Declaration · December 28, 2025
Due to the significant freezing rain expected this afternoon and continuing into the early morning hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, the Township of Asphodel-Norwood has declared a Significant Weather Event (SWE) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 239/02 – Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways.
Forecasted conditions may result in icy and slippery roads and walkways, and prolonged utility outages are possible. Significant damage to property, including buildings and trees, may occur due to the accumulation and weight of ice.
Under O. Reg. 239/02, a municipality may declare a Significant Weather Event when a weather hazard is approaching or occurring that has the potential to pose a significant danger to users of municipal roadways.
This declaration temporarily suspends the standard timelines for meeting winter maintenance objectives while the Significant Weather Event is ongoing. During this period, the Township will monitor weather conditions and deploy resources as deemed appropriate based on safety and operational conditions. As a result, travel on Township-maintained roads, parking lots, and sidewalks may be challenging, and it may take longer than usual to restore conditions to a normal state of repair. Once the Township declares that the Significant Weather Event has ended, standard winter maintenance timelines will resume.
Residents are urged to exercise caution when travelling and to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.
In the event of an extended power outage, the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre is available as a warming centre during an emergency. The facility may be accessed for device charging, water filling, showers, and more.
The Township thanks residents for their patience and understanding as Public Works crews work diligently to respond to this significant weather event.
