The Otonabee Regional Conservation Authority launched the Source Water Protection Plan after the Ontario government passed the Clean Water Act in 2006.
The plan is based on technical studies, collective policy development and extensive public consultation. The plan contains policies to protect the sources of municipal drinking water systems across the Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Region (TCCSPR), which includes the Township of Asphodel-Norwood. Policies in the plan use a variety of approaches to protect municipal residential drinking water sources including education and outreach, land use planning, and risk management plans. The source water protection spans a 14,500 square kilometre area spanning the Trent and Ganaraska watersheds, affecting drinking water in dozens of communities including Peterborough County.
