Blue Box Recycling |
Recycling is collected every week by Emterra who is contracted by the County of Peterborough, on behalf of the Township. If you have any questions or issues regarding your recycling please contact Emterra directly at 705-742-3139.
Please remember the following when sorting your recycling:
- Recycling must be at the curb, on the day of pick-up, by 7:00 a.m.
- Sort your materials into 2 blue boxes, containers and papers
- Keep your recycling loose in blue boxes - bagged recycling will not be collected
To purchase a Blue Boxes ($6.00) and/or Blue in the Loo (small recycling containers for the bathroom, $3.00), please contact the Municipal Office.
Holiday Schedule |
Collection will occur on all Statutory and Public Holidays with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Collection on Christmas Day will be cancelled each year (i.e. will not occur at all); and
- Collection on New Year’s Day will shift by one day, making all collections for the remainder of the week occur one day later, such that Friday’s collection occurs on Saturday.

Composter & Digester |
Between 30 to 50 percent of most garbage bags contain organic material. Reduce your waste by backyard composting. To purchase a composter ($30.00) or digester ($55.00 with county incentive or $75.00 without county incentive), please contact the Municipal Office.
Digesters are similar to composters but are able to process a wider variety of items. The digester install guide will give more information on their use and installation.

Garbage Collection |
The Township of Asphodel-Norwood adopted a Clear Bag Program on September 1, 2018. Since that time, the Township has earned the second highest waste diversion percentage in the County of Peterborough.
Garbage collection occurs weekly by Waste Connections of Canada Inc. on behalf of the Township.
Please remember the following when organizing your garbage:
- Your garbage must be at the curb, on the day of pick-up, by 7:00 a.m.
- Ensure your garbage is in clear plastic garbage bags - black or colour bags will not be collected
- 1 non-transparent privacy bag, the size of the common grocery bag, is permitted per clear garbage bag
- Residential households can place up to 2 clear garbage bags per collection
- Commercial businesses can place up to 6 clear garbage bags per collection
- Each clear garbage bag must have a tag ($2.00) attached and clearly visible

Note: If your garbage was not collected due to inclement weather conditions, please remove materials from curb/roadside. Any routes not collected are permitted double collection limits the following collection day.

Garbage tags are $2.00 each and may be purchased at the following locations:

Medical Exemption from Clear Bag Program |
The Township is able to accommodate special medical circumstances. Residents may apply for a clear bag exemption. It is the responsibility of the resident to to renew their exemption status each year.

Household Hazardous Waste can contain toxins that are harmful to waste collectors and the environment. Please take proper measures to dispose of these materials at the City/County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 400 Pido Road, Peterborough.

Blue Box Recycling is also available at the Transfer Station. Please sort your recycling prior to dropping it off. |
Mattress Collection |
The Township of Asphodel-Norwood has a mattress recycling program at the Transfer Station site.
Mattresses are collected and stored in a dry container where later they are reloaded by Township staff and shipped to the Peterborough Waste Management Facility (located at 1260 Bensfort Rd. in Peterborough). The mattresses are then loaded into tractor trailers, where they are then taken to a recycle facility.
The cost to dispose of a mattress is $25.00 per piece.

Reuse Bin |
Rather than placing unwanted bulky items in the disposal bins, a dedicated bin is available for reusable items. Items deemed unacceptable for reuse by the Transfer Station Attendant will require a tipping fee for disposal.
Acceptable items include, but are not limited to:

- Dressers
- Tables
- Chairs
- Windows
- Doors
- Toys
If you have an item not listed above, please check with the attendant.
Placing items in this bin helps the environment by not adding to the Peterborough Waste Management Facility (located at 1260 Bensfort Rd. in Peterborough) and allows another person to make use out of your unwanted item.
There is no charge for collecting items from this section.

Tire Collection |
Used tires can be dropped off at the transfer station free of charge. Please be prepared to check in with the landfill attendant and notify of how many tires are being dropped off.
You will also need to supply your name and phone number to the attendant.
The Township of Asphodel Norwood is mandated by the Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) program to log standard information regarding each tire collected as well as the individual who is dropping them off.
Please note that there may be some changes to this program in the near future.
