The Municipal Act is a consolidated statute governing the extent of powers and duties, internal organization, and structure of municipalities in Ontario. |
Municipal Elections Act |
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 regulates the conduct of municipal and school board elections in Ontario, and sets out roles for municipal clerks and councils. The Municipal Election Modernization Act has received Royal Assent and has made significant changes to how Municipalities and Schools Boards will administer elections. |
Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act |
The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act establishes a general right of access to records held by municipal government and local agencies, boards and commissions using these principles: any information held by government should, in general, be available to the public. |

The Clerk Department is also responsible for maintaining and providing access to all By-laws enacted, amended and repealed by Municipal Council. A By-law is a law passed under the Authority of a Provincial Act and is created as a way to address issues and concerns of the local community.
