SafeGuard Ontario - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
Break and enters continue to remain an all-too common occurrence in Canada, with more than 150,000 reported to police annually of which six in 10 are residential. Another 30% are businesses and 10% are other locations such as a school, shed or detached garage. Research indicates the decision to commit a crime is tied to the perceived risk of being caught and that a high frequency of re-victimization occurs during the 12 months following an initial break-in. SafeGuard Ontario is a public awareness and education initiative where specially trained members of the OPP and OPP’s Auxiliary Policing Program conduct Property Security Reviews of homes and small businesses. SafeGuard Ontario training provides an orientation to the basic principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) with a primary focus on target hardening techniques to help reduce or prevent re-victimization of property crimes. For more information on this program or to request a property audit, contact the Peterborough County Detachment at (705) 742-0401 or at opp.peterborough.county@opp.ca |

Vulnerable Persons Registry - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
On June 18, 2019 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a partnership with the MedicAlert foundation Canada. The OPP is supporting the MedicAlert Connect Protect service to assist vulnerable persons and/or caregivers of vulnerable people to voluntarily submit vital information to a database that can be accessed by dispatchers when requested by police officers. MedicAlert offers a one-of-a-kind service endorsed by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), which gives police officers quick 24/7 direct access to a MedicAlert subscriber's information. Information includes client's demographic and caregiver information, physical description, wandering history, possible wandering locations (if prone to wander or bolt), behaviour management strategies including anxiety triggers and de-escalation techniques and an up-to-date photo. This information will be useful to OPP members when dealing with an emergency involving a subscriber. Dispatchers from each Provincial Communication Centre (PCC) will be trained on how to access and use the MedicAlert database. MedicAlert has a fee of $60 a year for clients to register. However, clients can receive this service for free if they are unable to pay.
To register a vulnerable person of any age, visit the MedicAlert Connect Protect website. |
