Pedestrian Safety

A pedestrian crossover is a way for pedestrians to cross the road without stop signs or traffic signs. These locations are designated using special pavement markings, "stop for pedestrians" signage, and sometimes lights.

How is a crosswalk different from a crossover?

A crosswalk is usually found at an intersection with traffic signals, pedestrian signals or stop signs.

A crosswalk can be:

• the portion of a road that connects sidewalks on opposite sides of the road into a continuous path, or
• the portion of a road that is indicated for pedestrian crossing by signs, lines or other markings at any location, including an intersection

Drivers are required to stop at crosswalks that are located adjacent to stop signs and traffic signals, pedestrian crossovers with flashing lights and/or "stop for pedestrians" signs, and at school crossings when a crossing guard is present. 

Pedestrian Crossovers (Picture 1) are located on:

1. Alma Street (near Community Centre entrance)
2. County Road 40

Pedestrian Crossovers with Pedestrian Push Buttons (Picture 2) are located on:

1. Highway 7 (near St. Paul Catholic Elementary School)
2. *NEW* County Road 45 (near Maple View Retirement Residence)

1. County Road 45 at Spring Street
• Morning: 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
• Afternoon: 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
2. County Road 45 at Industrial Drive
   • A crossing guard is no longer stationed at County Road 45 and Industrial Drive with the NEW Pedestrian Crossover (with push buttons) installation at Maple View Retirement Residence.

Drivers: 

• Must come to a complete stop to comply with the "stop for pedestrians" sign, proceed with caution and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. 
• Must remain stopped until pedestrians have completely stepped onto the opposite sidewalk.  Driver must yield the whole roadway to pedestrians. 
• Must yield to vehicles after passing the crosswalk and only merge when safe to do so. 
• If a pedestrian is waiting to cross, drivers must make a complete stop to let pedestrians cross safely. 

Pedestrians: 

• Look both ways, make eye contact with drivers to ensure vehicles clearly see you, and indicate that you want to cross.
• If a vehicle is too close to safely stop, allow the vehicle to proceed before entering the crosswalk.
• Only cross when it is safe to do so. 

Cyclists: 

• Cyclists face the same responsibilities and fines as drivers. They must stop and yield at pedestrian crossovers when riding through crossovers.
• When crossing with pedestrians, follow rules for pedestrians: dismount and walk your bike across the road.
